Try “If our plans change, can we let each other know before the evening?” rather than “Communicate better”. A clear request gives both people something they can accept, adapt, or decline.
Agree how to revisit the topic
If either person needs a pause, discuss when to return to the conversation. Later, check whether the agreement actually helped. A preference reflection is a starting point for that discussion, not a rule the other person must follow.
